Q: We have been asked" Did
the Coalition of West Edmonton Communities for Burying the Line split up?
A: The short answer is no. We
are alive and well, and making progress on our mission to get the Heartland
Transmission Project line buried. In fact, we are far better able to do
so now that we have merged forces with RETA and, to that end, we are really
excited to announce that we will be having a REALLY BIG TOWN HALL MEETING on
November 24th at Rexall Place at 7:00 p.m. We expect over
5,000 people to turn out. This will be the most significant event of
its kind in Alberta's history, a chance for you to confirm what our elected
officials need to hear: Bury this line wherever it goes and you have
our support. Do otherwise and accept the consequences. When
we decided to merge with RETA a few weeks ago, three of our former board
members felt that it was better to focus on advocating only for the people
living along the West TUC. Fortunately, the majority of the board felt
it would better serve the interests of west Edmonton residents if we joined
forces with RETA. RETA's position was (and is) that the Heartland Line
has to be buried regardless of which of the 4 potential routes is selected.
We strongly believe there is strength in unity and in numbers - RETA
currently has about 4,000 registered members and that a non-NIMBY approach is
the only one that will win. So, in short, we are still here and
we're stronger than ever. (The departure of the three former board
members has unfortunately caused some confusion as they have decided to form
their own organization which they have named the West TUC Community
Alliance.) If
you were one of the 1,400 people who came out to our meeting at the West
Edmonton Christian Assembly on September 21st, we regrettably need
to inform you that we do not have your contact or registration information as
the dissenting former board members decided to take this information and
withhold it. Despite repeated attempts to reclaim this information
(which you gave to the Coalition and RETA in good faith) we have been
unsuccessful in getting it back. We could of course waste a lot of
resources employing legal means to regain this information but we have
decided instead to focus our energies on fighting the real enemy:
above-ground transmission lines and their proponents. Unfortunately
this means that we have to ask you to re-register, which you can do by going
to www.westtuc.com
and clicking "Contact Us/Join" or www.reta.ca
and clicking on the "Join RETA" button......it's free. We
thank you and apologize for the inconvenience. Our goal is to keep you
informed about issues, progress and how you can help through emails and
postings on our website. We
look forward to seeing you at our Town Hall Meeting on Nov 24th.
We will have a number of special guests for you including Danny Hooper as MC,
and Dr. Magda Havas, an expert on the health effects of high voltage power
lines from Trent University in Ontario. See you there! June
